The Return:

After a semester absence I am back! (Cue crickets chirping and tumble weeds blowing by…sigh.)

Last semester was a crazy one in the UMass Bakeshop and I didn’t have the time to write this blog. Rest assured I’m back and ready to regale you with my pastry curmudgeon musings.

The subject of Blog The Sixth is YOU!

What kinds baked items do you like to eat? What are you looking for? Do we fulfill your expectations? How do we rate? Are you having difficulty with a baking project and need advice? Do I know that guy from TV that does that cake show? Is a dog a man’s best friend? How long is a piece of string?

The floor is yours. Send me an email sasteven@umass.edu and I’ll do my best to get back to you.

No I’m not naive enough to think I’m going to be inundated with responses; Quite the opposite, which is why I thought of offering $100 cash to everyone that did respond. I said “thought about it” because that’s about as far as I got. It was a nice thought but there is no way my boss would agree to it and as I don’t have a private income I had to dismiss this option. But here’s the thing; what would we have to do to provoke a response? What would it take and why? Is being asked not enough? Have we gone so far down the road of “What’s in it for me?” that we’ve lost sight of the fact that it’s just nice to be asked?

Rest assured if you ask you shall receive an answer. It might not be the answer you were expecting or wanted but an answer none the less.

In other news, I wanted to congratulate one of our very own TOO. Those of you familiar with this blog will know all about the TOO but for those newcomers please refer to blog the 3rd…………………or was it blog the fourth? Whatever; Katrina Herrmann (newly inducted TOO member) placed third in a recent “Iron Chef Brownie Baking Competition”. Katrina worked extremely hard to perfect her Deluxe Brownie, topping each delicious piece with 24K gold leaf. She was only just pipped at the post but the judges were highly complementary of her rich bite sized brownie treat. Congratulations to Katrina for her sterling effort.

Don’t forget to drop me a line with your questions/comments even though there isn’t enough money in the budget to reward anyone with $100 (and by “enough money” I mean “no money at all”) and I’ll do my level best (or a pretty good impersonation of someone doing their level best) to get back to you.
