Bacon Cheeseburger Calzone
Wynne Family | HALIFAX, MA
“Joey’s favorite is the Bacon Cheeseburger Calzone. I only make it 3 to 4 times a year since it is a comfort food full of tasty fats and we normally try to eat as healthy as possible.” LAURIE WYNNE
INGREDIENTS
Serves 8
1 package refrigerated pizza dough
1 pound bacon, cut into 2-inch strips and cooked until crisp 1 pound ground beef
1 pound Velveeta cheese, cubed
1 egg, beaten with 2 teaspoons water
1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)
PREPARATION
1. Place the dough on the counter for 20 to 30 minutes to bring it to room temperature. This will aid in the stretching of the dough.
2. Preheat oven to 450°F. Grease a baking sheet.
3. In a frying pan over medium-high heat, cook the bacon until crisp and browned. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate. Discard the fat from the pan. Add the beef to the pan, return to medium-high heat and cook until browned. Drain and discard the fat and juices. Lower the heat to medium, add the Velveeta to the pan and cook until melted, stirring occasionally. Stir in the bacon. Remove from heat and set aside to let cool.
4. Remove the dough from the packaging. Stretch it in a long triangular motion, being careful not to rip holes in the dough. Place the stretched dough onto the counter and spread the cooled Velveeta mixture evenly on top. Roll the dough up like a jelly roll, tuck both ends under and place on the prepared baking sheet.
5. Brush the top of the dough with the egg mixture and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired. Using a paring knife, poke 3 holes on the top of the dough to help vent the steam. Bake for 20 minutes.
