5. To make the topping, in a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves (if desired) and sprinkle over the tops of the muffins.
6. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean, about 20 minutes.
7. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer the muffins from the pan to a wire rack to cool completely.
