Dear Student,
UMass Dining in collaboration with the Nutrition Assessment Lab are looking for first year students for a nutrition study on health and wellness including academic performance. You are receiving this email because you are a freshman of fall 2016, enrolled in a UMass meal plan.
You will be asked to:
1) Come to the Nutrition Assessment Lab (NAL) at the Nutrition Department 2 times during this semester (spring 2017) to fill out questionnaires and have your weight, height, waist circumference, and blood pressure measured. You will also provide a hair sample at only the first visit.
2) Make one visit to the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) on campus for a DXA scan to measure your bone density and body composition, for which you will receive a copy of your report.
3) Answer diet questions via phone 3 times throughout the semester.
4) We will collect your GPA from Registrar’s Office and meal swipe information from Dining Services.
5) You may be asked to visit the University Health Services (UHS) one time to provide a blood sample if you consent to it.
6) If you agree to the blood draw, you may also be asked to wear an activity monitor for 4 days during the semester.
Each time you complete the visits you will receive a $20 gift card to the university bookstore, totaling $40 if you complete both visits. If you agree to provide a blood sample, you will be given an additional $20 gift card, totaling $60 if you complete both data collection visits and the blood draw.
