Nana's Night-Before French Toast

Preparation
1. Spray a 9- by 13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Cut the bread into 1-inch slices and arrange in the prepared baking dish.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, salt and vanilla. Pour the egg mixture over the bread. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
3. Uncover the baking dish and dot the bread with the butter. Sprinkle cinnamon on top. Place the dish in a cold oven and then set to 350°F. Bake uncovered until golden brown, 45 to 50 minutes. Serve with your favorite syrups and other toppings.

Serves 4 to 6
1 loaf crusty French bread
8 large eggs, beaten
3 cups milk
4 teaspoons granulated sugar 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Ground cinnamon
Syrups and other toppings, for serving
