WOODMAN | ESSEX, MA | SERVES 4-6
Hamburg Gravy represents comfort food, love and happy memories. It was a favorite of both McKenzie and his grandfather.
INGREDIENTS
1 1⁄2 - 2 lb. hamburger
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 green pepper, finely chopped
1 - 2 tbsp. olive oil
1 tsp. beef base or beef cube, optional 2 tbsp. flour
1 - 1 1⁄2 cups cold water
Salt and pepper to taste
Large potatoes, for mashed potatoes Corn kernels
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Sauté onion and pepper in olive oil until soft. Add hamburger. Once it’s fully cooked drain grease and return to fry pan.
2. In a separate bowl mix cold water and flour vigorously and make sure there are no lumps. Add to fry pan. Add beef base or beef cube for flavor.
3. Cook on medium low heat or simmer for 15 minutes to allow gravy to thicken. If gravy is not thick enough, mix in mashed potato.
4. Continue to stir gravy to make sure it does not stick. If too bland, because you added too much flour or omitted beef base, add gravy master for taste and color. For gluten free, omit flour and add some mashed potato.
5. Serve Hamburg Gravy over mashed potatoes and add corn.
