This is a favorite dish for the whole family - adults included!! It is requested at most family, school and camp gatherings. A comfort food that is easy to make!!
INGREDIENTS
4 cups milk
6 tbsp. butter
1⁄2 cup flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dry mustard
1⁄2 tsp. ground pepper
1 lb. American cheese slices
2 cups diced ham, optional
1 16 oz. box elbow macaroni
1⁄2 cup Panko seasoned bread crumbs
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare the macaroni according to the package. While macaroni cooks, prepare the cheese sauce.
2. Melt the butter, add the flour, salt, pepper and ground mustard in a saucepan. The mixture will become a thick paste. Slowly add the milk one cup at a time over low heat. Stir constantly until mixture is thick. Add the cheese and cook until melted. If using ham, mix in at this point.
3. Drain the macaroni and place in a 9 x 13 pan. Cover with the cheese sauce and mix well. Cover with the Panko crumbs.
4. Bake at 375˚ F for 25 minutes until browned and bubbly.
