AUNT AUDREY’S CHOCOLATE WARTIME CAKE
INGREDIENTS
For cake:
1 1⁄2 cup flour
3 tbsp. baking cocoa 1 tsp. baking soda
1⁄2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup cooking oil 1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup cold water
For frosting:
1⁄2 cup butter
1⁄2 cup Crisco shortening 1⁄2 cup granulated sugar 1⁄2 cup warm milk
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1 Sift together in bowl the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt.
2 Make 3 holes in dry ingredients. In the first hole pour oil. In the second, add vinegar. In the third, pour vanilla. DO NOT STIR.
3 Pour cold water over all ingredients, then stir with a fork to moisten everything. Pour into ungreased 8-inch or 9-inch square pan.
4 Bake in 350°F oven for 30-35 minutes, until cake springs back when touched.
5 Cream together butter, shortening and sugar in bowl.
6 Add warm milk, flour and vanilla. Beat for 7-10 minutes, then spread over top of cake.
Note: This recipe can be doubled for an 11-x-13-inch pan.
